Lake Trout Fishing
Troll or jig for our Lake Trout. We have one hole over 180 feet deep on Gowganda Lake. Some are using a fish attractant on the baits others may be tipping the jigs with live bait or chunks of cut bait. The new fish finders are able to track you jig down to the bottom in 100 feet or more and you can even see the fish chase or attack your jig. Tipping your jig or hook with a piece of cut bait (northern pike minnow, sucker, or perch can sometimes give you an advantage. Using scent oils on the cut bait can also be helpful. Change your bait often. Keep bait on that is not water logged. Anglers using pork link sausage as bait also see some success. This works well when fishing from shore and is also being used when jigging for fish. The lake trout seem to have favourite areas in the lake during the different seasons.
It has been suggested that Lake Trout tend to stay the opposite side of a lake from which the wind is blowing. The theory is that the wind blows the warmer, less oxygenated water to the downwind side of the lake so the trout avoid it. In reality, thermo clines in almost all bodies of water separate the warmer surface layers from the lower layers and there is no mixing of the surface waters with the lower levels below forty feet so one need not worry about this. If you catch a fish in one part of the lake, keep trying there until you prove it to be hot spot where more fish are congregating on just a lucky chance that a fish was swimming by and took your lure. Trout are very capable of spitting out hooks. Set your hook and keep your rod top high with a constant tension.
